Apolo Ohno And Healthy Living

Winter Olympian speed skater Apollo Ohno

It is said that we tend to take our health for granted until we are beset by an illness or disease that compels us then to reflect on the value and importance of being healthy. When illness does befall us, then we change our tune right away and start looking for ways we can improve our health. Lifestyle, stress, work situation, home and family circumstances, financial situation, and diet are all factors that we consider when we think about our health and the influences that determine whether or not we will manage to maintain a life that of health and well being.

Growing older is something we often think of as a reduction in health, a slow diminution of our mental and physiological strength and power takes place. However, we do not necessarily have to succumb to the illnesses and diseases so often associated with old age. Most of us expect to experience a gradual decline, and this is obviously not at all a pleasant thought. Therefore, we try not to think about old age and what may befall us in the autumn of our lives. The good new is that we can do something right now in our current lives to help reinforce our immune system and strengthen every cell in our beings before we reach our so-called golden years. Diet and exercise are the two most common principles that underlie our state of health. Doctors will often tell patients to exercise more and to maintain a good diet, along with not smoking and drinking too much alcohol. But what kind of diet and what kind of exercise is best for each person? We know that a daily diet that is rich in nutrients deriving from plant foods is preferable to one based in animal products and processed foods. Apolo Ohno is a man who knows how to appreciate good health, and maximizing one’s potential.

Co-CEO of Allysian Sciences, Apolo Ohno has worked hard to bring to the world of nutrition the most cutting edge and clinically proven effective nutritional supplements for cognitive enhancement. Apolo Ohno – What It Means to be An Ironman

Apolo Ohno

Apolo Ohno made the decision to compete in the 2014 Ironman competition in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and committed to it. After four years off from speed skating, Apolo missed the training and the competition involved in this intensive sport and decided that the Ironman competition was a good way to get it back.

The Ironman is the most difficult one-day race in the entire world. It covers over 140 miles broken up in three different parts, swimming, biking, and running. It begins with a 2.4 mile swim which takes place in some type of body of water depending on the location of the competition. Immediately after you exit the water you are jumping right onto a bike to do a 112-mile bike ride. Then if you can possibly endure anymore you go on to the 26.2 miles of pure running.

The ironman competition dates back to 1978 when John Collins, thought it might be a good idea to combine three of the hardest competitions on the island to make just one race. John and his wife, called it the ironman triathlon and challenged anyone who would be up to competing, and on Februaury 18, 1978, 15 competitors showed up to battle and work for the ironman title.

Enough about the things that everyone knows about here are some things that most people never realized when thinking about the ironman competition. The race is continuous meaning you don’t get to stop to eat something or even go to the bathroom it is a go-go-go situation. Most ironman competitors will urinate if necessary while they are biking, they’ll slightly lift up from their seat and just go, not exactly the most ideal conditions. Another thing is that amateurs are not on a separate course from professional competitors; the only difference is that the amateurs will start 30 minutes after the professionals have gone. The next thing is that there is a time cap on how long you have to complete the competition. You have a merely 16 hours to reach the finish line. The world record time is held at 7 hours, 41 minutes, and 33 seconds. Could you imagine?

Honestly for most people, simply competing is an amazing accomplishment; I mean who can say that they covered over 140 miles via swimming, biking, and running all within 16 hours? Not many people. The type of endurance and tenacity it requires is unbeatable.

Apolo Ohno – Man of Many Trades

Apolo Ohno has won 8 Winter Olympic medals throughout his speed skating career, which is more than any other American in Olympic history. He has won two golds, two silvers, and four bronze medals. He started out only at the age of 14 years old, because his father thought that keeping him involved in sports would keep him out of trouble. He quickly became the U.S. National Champion in 1997, and kept that title from 2001-2009. In 2008 he won the overall world title at the short-track world championships in South Korea. In 2010 he competed in the Olympic Games in Vancouver where he finally surpassed Bonnie Blair who had until then held the title of having won the most Olympic medals during the winter games for an American. At this point Apolo made the decision to retire from speed skating competitively and became involved in many other activities.

In 2007 Apolo Ohno decided to expand his career off of the ice. He received an opportunity to compete on the television series Dancing with the Stars on season 4 and that’s just what he did. He partnered with Julianne Hough and took home the win. He reappeared on Dancing with the Stars in the “All-Stars” season in 2012, but didn’t go home with another championship. Similar to speed skating, competitive dancing is just as challenging, requiring a lot of time and effort, so for Apolo being able to apply his athleticism and competitive nature was a great opportunity and he is happy with how him and his partner performed.

Since his retirement Apolo has been very active. He’s competed in other athletic events, done philanthropy work, and started his own company. His career in speed skating might be finished but he isn’t remotely finished leaving his mark on the world, it is not the last time we will hear of Apolo. He went on to compete in the 2011 New York City Marathon and he recently completed an Iron man Competition, which was one of his greatest challenges yet. Not only has he kept up his athleticism and competitive edge but he has also ventured into the business realm. He co-founded his business called, Allysian Sciences, with Rod Jao, with the hopes of helping others utilizes their abilities as much as possible. He started with experimentation on himself and once he discovered what worked for him, he wanted to share with the world.

Apolo Ohno – Dedicated Athlete

Apolo Ohno grew up in Seattle, Washington and at a young age became involved in sports. He started out swimming competitively but then discovered his true passion was in speed skating. It didn’t take Apolo long to succeed shortly after entering into competitive speed skating in 1997 he won the U.S. short-track championship. Unfortunately this success was short-lived because of his less than stellar performance at the 1988 Olympic trials. At this time in his life, he was only 15 years olds still very young and he had to determine that if being a speed skater was what he really wanted to do. It was a major decision to make and not one he could take lightly as in order to become a part of the Olympics he would have to train and work harder than he had ever done. After a week away from all the hustle and bustle, he decided that speed skating was what he wanted and he was ready to commit 100%, to go above and beyond in order to excel.

That was all it took and Apolo’s career in speed skating quickly blossomed. Quickly there after in 1999, Apolo won the Junior World Championships and then in 2000-2001 was the overall winner of the World Cup. This led him to make the 2002 Olympic team where he took home a silver and gold metal during the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. In only a few short years Apolo accomplished so much in his speed skating career.

This was truly only the beginning of his competitive speed skating career and he went on to win overall champion at the World Cup from 2002-2005. Then at the 2005 World Championships he won two gold medals at both the 1,000-meter and 3,000 meter competitions. Finally in 2006 the Olympics came around again and he was able to go home with one gold medal and two bronze medals.

It’s prevalent that Apolo meant what he decided at only 15 years old, he was ready to commit himself body, mind, and spirit to speed skating. He dedicated years of his life to training as hard as he possibly could, which led him to all this success in his speed skating career. He did not give up when his training took over his life he instead embraced it allowing it to motivate and push him further and ended up with several gold medals in the end.

This ex Olympian has a truly competitive nature, and he obviously knows a thing or two about the sporting world, and so this may seem like an obvious next move for such a competitive person in such a specialized field. His goal with the company, which is called Allysian Sciences, is to capitalize on his championship sporting experience and directly infuse it into the lifeblood of the company. The flagship product is a supplement designed to enhance the mental performance of athletes during high stress competitions, and so far, in the year that they have been open, things are looking good. His natural passionate and energy has been instrumental in getting the company off its feet, and he is deeply committed to producing genuinely game changing products that are truly effective. He is also known for donating to the Ronald McDonald House after the 2012 Olympic Games.

In an interview, he was recently recorded as saying:

“Do I feel any pressure as the most decorated Winter Olympian in American history? None at all. The only pressures that I know I face are those of how to pay it forward: How can I continually make a positive impact in people’s lives, help others achieve their dreams, create their own Olympic mindset, creating champions within themselves?” Clearly, this is a man with great ambition, and who knows how he intends to achieve it.

Olympic Drama with Apolo Ohno

It was while participating in a 1500 meter speed skating semifinal in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy that American sporting legend Apolo Ohno unfortunately fell and ended up finishing fifth, despite looking earlier in the race like he might take the gold medal. Needless to say, this result was a huge disappointment for the Ohno, who had come into the race as the favorite to win after achieving a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics. This devastating result had a huge impact on Ohno mentally, and was arguably the reason he then came only third in the 1000m race, achieve bronze medal, rather than a gold. Now, while most would see winning a bronze medal as something of an achievement, so driven and confident was Ohno that he saw this essentially as a failure, and in the aftermath he suffered considerably from anxiety and stress. There was one more race that year left in which he had the chance to take the gold, and this was the 500m sprint. However, he was heavily haunted by his two losses, and he told a reporter that he was aiming to perform a “perfect race”, and that nothing else would do. He was under considerable pressure from both himself and from his country to get a gold, and so driven and focused was he, that he managed to do just that. He was in the lead from the start to the finish, and as he crossed the finish line the crowd went wild for him. He had achieved his lifelong goal of becoming an all time great in the sport of Short Track Speed Skating. He had held this dream from early childhood, where he had watched the sport avidly on the TV and known that he was destined to participate in this high speed, high risk activity. He had a natural affinity for sports in general, and was also at the time a great swimmer. After achieving his success in the sport, he decided to retire, and decided to see if he could achieve some kind of success outside of the sporting world. He therefore went into business, and became a hugely competitive and successful business man in this field too. His biggest success came with his health and wellness company that produced a supplement designed to help athletes with their mental performance, undoubtedly inspired by his experience at the 2006 Olympics, where only his mental strength kept him together.
